What Is
An Allergist?

An allergist — also known as an allergist/immunologist — is a physician specially trained to diagnose, treat, and manage allergies, asthma, and disorders of the immune system. After completing medical school, allergists complete specialized training in internal medicine or pediatrics, followed by additional years of fellowship training focused on allergy and immunology.

Allergists don’t just treat symptoms — they identify the root causes of allergic reactions, help prevent flare-ups, and develop personalized plans to improve long-term quality of life.

Preparing for Allergy Testing

Preparing for Allergy Testing

Most of our new patients receive allergy testing during their first visit, so it’s very important to discontinue all antihistamines for 5–7 days before your appointment. Antihistamines can interfere with the accuracy of your skin test results.

Please stop the following types of medications unless otherwise directed:

  • Common allergy medications: Zyrtec (cetirizine), Claritin (loratadine), Allegra (fexofenadine), Xyzal (levocetirizine), Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
  • Combination cold or sinus medicines containing antihistamines: NyQuil, DayQuil, Tylenol PM, Advil PM, or sleep aids
  • If you are unsure whether a medication you take contains antihistamines, please call our office — our staff will be happy to assist.

During Your Visit

Your visit begins with a detailed history and physical examination performed by a board-certified allergist. We’ll review your symptoms, triggers, environmental exposures, medical history, and treatment goals.

If indicated, we may proceed with focused allergy testing on the same day. Tests offered at The Allergy Suite include, but are not limited to:

Skin Prick Testing: identifies sensitivities to common environmental and food allergens
Intradermal Testing: detects more subtle allergic reactions not seen on skin prick testing
Patch Testing: helps diagnose contact dermatitis (skin reactions to products, metals, or chemicals)
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT): measures lung function for patients with asthma or breathing concerns

Once testing is completed, we review your results in detail and develop a customized management plan, which may include allergen avoidance, medication optimization, and immunotherapy when appropriate. All of this happens during the same visit!
