The immune system is your body’s defense against infections and diseases. It protects you from viruses, bacteria and other harmful germs. When it detects any of these foreign invaders, it deploys an army of cells to attack these harmful invaders. In immune system disorders, your immune system activity becomes either abnormally high or low. Thus, your immune system doesn’t function the way it should, in case of immune system disorders. You can get immune system disorders evaluation and management at The Allergy Suite in Novi, Michigan. Let us understand the various kinds of immune system disorders and their treatment options:
Immunodeficiency Disorders :
These diseases are a result of low immune system activity, preventing your body from fighting infections and diseases. Immunodeficiency disorders are of two types:
Primary immunodeficiency disorders – When an individual is born with a weak immune system due to a deficiency or genetic causes, it is called primary immune deficiency. These include Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID), Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), among many other disorders.
Acquired immunodeficiency disorders -When an individual suffers from a disease that weakens their immune system, it is called acquired immune deficiency. These diseases include AIDS, leukemia and multiple myeloma, to mention a few of them.
Autoimmune Diseases :
These diseases are a result of overactivity of the immune system, as your immune system mistakenly attacks and damages your own body. It makes a part of your body as foreign and releases autoantibodies to attack them. These diseases include SLE, rheumatoid arthritis, and many other diseases.
Overactive Immune System
An individual’s immune system can be overactive. This generally causes an allergic reaction when the individual comes in contact with certain substances. If an individual is born with certain genes, their immune system can react to harmless substances present in the environment. These substances are known as allergens. Common allergens include certain foods, dust, pollen and mold.
There are some conditions that can occur as a result of an overactive immune system. These include:
Asthma is one of the most common conditions resulting from an overactive immune system. Individuals suffering from asthma experience the immune system’s response in the lungs. This can lead to wheezing, coughing and breathing problems. Asthma can be triggered by common allergens like dust or pollen or by an irritant like tobacco smoke. Other triggers might play a role in asthma exacerbations like weather changes, infections and exercise.
Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is an itchy rash with special characteristics. It causes the skin to become irritated and inflamed.
Allergic rhinitis causes sneezing, stuffiness, runny nose, sniffling, itchy throat, swelling of the nasal passages and sinus infections. It is an allergic reaction from indoor allergens like pets and dust or outdoor allergens like molds or pollen.
The treatment for immune system disorders varies in case of each condition and its severity. You should visit a doctor if you experience symptoms of an autoimmune disease or an immunodeficiency disorder. Nevertheless, if you experience any allergy or immune system disorders resulting from an overactive immune system, you should visit an allergist.
