Mold Allergy
Evaluation & Treatment in Novi, MI

Mold allergies occur when your immune system overreacts to mold spores in the air. These microscopic particles are present both indoors and outdoors and thrive in damp or humid environments — basements, bathrooms, attics, air-conditioning units, and even piles of wet leaves.

Common mold allergens include:

  • Alternaria
  • Aspergillus
  • Cladosporium
  • Penicillium
  • Helminthosporium

Allergy Testing and Asthma Connection

Identifying Mold Allergies

Symptoms can resemble those of other allergies but often worsen in damp environments or after rain. You may notice:

  • Nasal congestion, sneezing, or runny nose
  • Post-nasal drip or chronic sinus infections
  • Coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath
  • Itchy or watery eyes
  • Fatigue, especially in humid weather
  • Worsening eczema or skin irritation

For some people, especially those with asthma, mold exposure can trigger significant breathing difficulty or flare-ups.

How We Diagnose Mold Allergy

At The Allergy Suite, we perform focused allergy testing to identify whether mold is a trigger for your symptoms.
Testing options include:

  • Skin Prick Testing: Detects sensitivity to common indoor and outdoor molds.
  • Intradermal Testing: Used when more detailed evaluation is needed for subtle mold sensitivities.
  • Our clinic uses state-of-the-art testing panels that include a wide range of mold species, ensuring an accurate and complete assessment of your allergic profile.

Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)

Because mold allergies can contribute to asthma and chronic cough, we often perform pulmonary function testing to assess your breathing and measure airway inflammation.
Our trained staff will guide you step-by-step through the test, helping us objectively determine how your lungs are functioning and whether mold exposure is affecting your respiratory health.

Treatment Options for Mold Allergy

Once your triggers are identified, your allergist will design a personalized treatment plan, which may include:

  • Environmental control strategies: Reducing humidity, improving ventilation, and using HEPA filtration.
  • Medications: Antihistamines, nasal sprays, or inhalers to manage inflammation and symptoms.
  • Allergy immunotherapy: Allergy shots that gradually build tolerance to mold allergens, providing long-term relief.
  • Skin care guidance: For patients whose mold allergy worsens eczema or contact dermatitis.
